The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment Opens its Doors
More than 400 donors, hospital and community leaders joined in celebrating the grand opening of The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment at St. Joseph Hospital on June 19, 2008.

The campaign for the Center concluded its fundraising activities on December 31, 2007, having raised more than $22 million in private philanthropy – far surpassing its initial $15 million goal. An active volunteer campaign committee, strong hospital leadership, and a compelling need for cancer services in the community all contributed to this success. Gifts to support the building campaign came from grateful patients and their families, community members, and others who have been touched by cancer.

The Center opened to patients in July, and features:

• Nurse navigators to help patients through the complexities of cancer care
• A patient-focused infusion center
• Convenient access to imaging technology
• Extensive radiation therapy modalities
• Cancer genetic evaluations, consultations, genetic testing, risk reduction
  strategies and lifelong surveillance plans
• Education center, Science Gallery and an extensive cancer website
• Resource Library and information center
• Onsite retail pharmacy and clinical lab
• Comforting amenities including a “Place of Hope/Sala de Esperanza”,

Donor Profile:
Dr. White’s Legacy at St. Joseph Hospital

Ralph White, M.D., shown in the Center’s Multi-Disciplinary Conference Room that bears his name, has made a significant gift in support of the Center, among the three largest gifts to the campaign. Dr. White, age 98, was on the medical staff of St. Joseph Hospital for over four decades before retiring in 1976. He is extremely excited about making this gift in his lifetime and being able to witness the advances that we are making in the world of cancer.

Dr. White is an inspiration to many. In 2003, his gift to benefit the Patient Care Center was the largest gift ever made by a retired physician. Since retiring from his medical practice, he has been an active hospital volunteer logging more than 10,000 hours of service.  In 2004, the Foundation honored Dr. White with the Spirit of St. Joseph Award for this extraordinary commitment of time and treasure to the hospital.     Top
