The combined gifts for both the Redwood Memorial and
St. Joseph Hospital Foundations were $1,919.783,
an increase of almost 18% over the previous year and within 3% of their annual goal. The hospitals’ executive teams and area leadership team have achieved nearly 100% participation in the earliest phase of an upcoming capital campaign and 39% of employees have also donated to the fund. A joint newsletter has been developed and will be distributed quarterly to 64,000 area households. Exciting programs funded and organized by the combined Foundations over the past year include:

Wii Therapy
Thanks to a grant from the St. Joseph Hospital Volunteers, the Rehabilitation Center
at St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka offers one of the latest in rehabilitation technologies-
“Wii-habilitation.” Using an interactive Nintendo Wii game system, patients have fun while improving balance, stability, range of motion, coordination, cognitive abilities, hand-eye coordination and all motor skills. Patients often become so engaged in the games they forget they are exercising and play longer, pushing themselves harder in their efforts to win Wii tennis, golf, bowling, baseball, boxing and auto racing.   Top

Golf Classic Successful
The St. Joseph Health Foundation Golf Classic was held on June 26th and won rave reviews from all participants. The two-day event kicked off with a live and silent auction and dinner, which was followed by a sunny day of golfing. A benefit for the St. Joseph Hospital Northeast Tower project, the event raised a total of $118,000, including a record of more than $47,000 raised from the tournament’s auctions.   Top

Eel River Valley Idol
Budding performers had a chance at their 15 minutes of fame during the Redwood Memorial Foundation Eel River Valley Idol event held in Scotia in August. Audience members enjoyed lively performances by local musicians, singers and other aspiring entertainers vying for the title of Eel River Valley Idol 2008. The event benefits the Redwood Memorial Foundation.   Top

Raising money for pediatric services
One of the most popular hospital-sponsored events of the year is the Peter Cottontail & Friends Easter party held annually in the spring. This year more than 300 children attended the party, posing for photos with life-sized costumed characters and enjoying carnival games and a festive lunch. Over 40 children opted to become “junior sponsors” of St. Joseph Hospital pediatric services by collecting money in a special piggy bank over the course of the year that is then used to purchase books and toys to make hospitalized children feel more comfortable during their stay. The hospital’s Peter Cottontail events have raised more than $50,000 for pediatric services over the years.   Top

Benefit Ball
Every November the Redwood Memorial Foundation puts on a benefit to purchase new equipment for various divisions of the hospital. This year funds from the event, scheduled for November 1, will go toward a new 32-slice CT scanner. Redwood Memorial Hospital provides much needed services to patients throughout the Eel River Valley and beyond. The continued support the community generously gives to Redwood Memorial Hospital is a significant factor in the high quality of medical care available to the community. Over the years, more than $1.2 million has been raised at the Benefit Ball.   Top
