Fullerton, Placentia & La Habra Obesity Prevention Plans
Childhood obesity has been identified as the reason why our children won’t live as long as their parents. St. Jude Medical Center has taken on a leadership role with community collaboratives in the cities of Fullerton, Placentia and La Habra to ensure all children grow into healthy adults.

Fullerton: Since 2006, St. Jude Medical Center has partnered with the Fullerton Collaborative and representatives from key stakeholder groups to address the epidemic of obesity head-on. The Fullerton Collaborative Project received funding from the Health Funders Partnership of Orange County to develop a city-wide obesity prevention plan which provides input into the City General Plan related to policies promoting a healthy environment, works with the schools to improve their meal program and provides the Vida Sana Program at the St. Jude Neighborhood Health Center for overweight children and their families.

Placentia: The Placentia Families First Project was supported by funding from the St. Joseph Health System Foundation. This exciting project has resulted in low-income parents in four neighborhoods working with the city of Placentia and local schools to design neighborhood parks and advocate for open access to school property after hours

La Habra: La Habra has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in Orange County. With St. Jude Medical Center’s leadership the La Habra Collaborative developed a plan that included partnering with the city of La Habra to institute physical activity time at the beginning of each La Habra City Summer Concert series and developed a community calendar featuring healthy recipes. Collaborative members were provided with information on healthy snacks by the La Habra City School District.

These initiatives are part of a broader medical center plan that is also funding programs in the schools, developing protocols in pediatric offices and expanding services to low-income communities.
